 Day 8 - Sunday with Host Families: Luciana and Noah

Luciana: Today we spent the whole day with our host families. My family went to a beach called Caorle. The beach was very beautiful and many things were different here compared to the beaches in California. For example, there were clean bathrooms and all the chairs had little covers for your face. 

Another example of these drastic differences are the potable water available everywhere to everyone. While in California you don’t usually drink the water in faucets coming from the kitchen, statues, or even public bathrooms, that is not the case in Italy. Water is essential for a healthy, sustainable life, and Italy recognizes that by making all sources of water both potable and easy to access. 

Moreover, the Mediterranean sea water in Italy is more tranquil and warm than California’s frigid and unpredictable sea water. I was able to enjoy my afternoon swimming in the calm waters that consisted within an Italian beach and, luckily, did not get sunburnt. After we got gelato in the town by the beach. Overall this was the best day in Italy yet!

Noah: Today, my family, Christian, his brother Andrea, and his two parents, along with others, went to beach Caorle to stay cool for the hot summer. Because we were first to arrive, we took a short tour around the small beach city to see some of its historical buildings. First, we saw an old church which stood in the middle of the city. Its walls were tall and it was covered in a rough coat of white paint. A service was taking place, so I was unable to clearly see the inside of the church but from what I saw, the walls were covered in paintings and tall statues stood next to the altar. 

Our tour took us to a second and final church right on the seaside. It is said that the church was built right in front of the ocean and devoted to mother Mary, to protect the beach and the city from high tides. It was a tall brick building with windows at the very top. We were unfortunately not able to go inside because the others arrived, and we had to meet up with them.

When we got to the beach and set ourselves up under our reserved umbrellas, everyone ran to the ocean. The ocean was still and slightly cold--the perfect conditions to cool off and converse with friends during a hot summer day. After about an hour of hanging out, we left to go back to our stuff and spent another hour and a half conversing while eating lunch. 

After lunch, it was time to get some gelato! All the kids walked back into the city center and we searched for gelato. I got chocolate and chocolate chip. After gelato, clouds unexpectedly covered the sky, the winds picked up, and it started to drizzle. We all immediately sprinted to our things which we left behind on the beach and packed up. I left with my family and we headed home.

    So fun to hear about your cross cultural beach experiences... with your respective host families. Keep on sending the photos- really great to track your trip through stories and pictures. Has gelato become part of your daily diet:-)

    I love how you noticed the accessibility to water on the beach and everywhere.This also cuts down on plastic waste!

Amelia and Leela: A view of Padua’s Basilica di San Antonio. We started off the day with breakfast with our host families. We then met up as a whole group outside of the school in Valdo to ride an hour long bus into Padua. Italy 2025 - Day 8: A Free Day with Italian Host Families - Filiz and Allison

Filiz and Allison: Part of the system of canals and the River Sile that surrounds the medieval core of Treviso. Today, we didn’t have a fixed agenda besides spending time with our Italian host families (which meant we could sleep in after a week of early mornings). We began the day with a leisurely morning before catching a train to Treviso, a city/town near Valdobbiadene. The historical center of Treviso. While it was a relatively long ride, it was nice to have the time to rest and reflect on the previous days. In Treviso, we shopped at a few stores before sitting down for brunch. The menu included a mix of Italian and American food, and it was admittedly nice to have a reminder of the cuisine back home. A representative store in Treviso. Italy 2025 - Day 7: Venice - Anya and Carthan

Anya and Carthan: After our first night staying with the students from Valdobbiadene, we enjoyed separate mornings and breakfasts with each of our host families before meeting at the Montebelluna train station. We changed trains in Treviso to reach our final destination of Venice. The group and our Italian friends on the regional commuter train to Venice.
