Day 7 - Saturday in Valdobbiadene: Bridget and Aliya

Bridget: My day started by getting up at 6:40 and having breakfast with another host and student pair who live in the same town. We drove to school together and got some amazing pictures of Follina, the town that I am staying in. There are lots of grape vine fields because the wine here (known as Prosecco) is famous. We then went to the Giuseppe Verdi school in Valdobbiadene and watched a volleyball and soccer game in the school gymnasium. We then toured the school and saw the science classrooms and got a debrief on all the places we will be seeing this week: Valdobbiadene's vineyards, Venice, Padua and the Dolomites. 

After splitting off from the group for lunch, some people will be going to Treviso to see a soccer match, and some people will go to the city for dinner. I am going to the soccer match in Treviso which is a medieval town, and we will walk around the town before the match at 9:00 PM. When we got to the town, I spilt off with some Poly kids to go clothes shopping then meet up with everyone else and go to dinner before watching the match on the TV screen. Today was our first full day in Valdo and it was amazing to see what everyday life is like here.

Aliya: This morning, the parents of Annapaola (my Italian host student), made me an omelette with tomatoes and cheese for breakfast. Then, Annapaola and I went to her school and met up with all of the other Italian hosts and the people on our trip. The Italian host students’ school played against another school in volleyball and soccer, and unfortunately, they lost both games. However, the soccer game was extremely entertaining to watch. For the majority of the game, we were losing to the other team by like 3-4 points. But in the last 30 minutes, we caught up to the other team and tied in a 7:7. In the last five minutes of the game, we somehow miraculously scored another goal and was ahead by one point, but the other team caught up in the final minute and we had to end the math with a shoot-off, which we lost because the other team had a really good goalie.

After the games, we watched some videos that introduced the places we’re going to visit next few days and visited to different classrooms. The science teacher showed us some experiments. Apparently, they also had a hamster in the science classroom, but it died and the students buried it and made a little tomb. After that, I went home with Annapaola, ate some really delicious pasta for lunch, and took a quick nap. In the afternoon, we took a train to a city called Trevisto with the entire group, and we went shopping and ate dinner. I played the card game Go Fish with my friends, and I somehow miraculously got five sets of cards during one round. Overall, today was very fun and I look forward to next week.

Amelia and Leela: A view of Padua’s Basilica di San Antonio. We started off the day with breakfast with our host families. We then met up as a whole group outside of the school in Valdo to ride an hour long bus into Padua. Once we got to Padua, we took a walking tour of the Basilica of Sant Antonio, the Prato di Valle, and the Piazza delle Erbe. The Poly group and our Italian friends walk through Prato di Valle. Italy 2025 - Day 8: A Free Day with Italian Host Families - Filiz and Allison

Filiz and Allison: Part of the system of canals and the River Sile that surrounds the medieval core of Treviso. Today, we didn’t have a fixed agenda besides spending time with our Italian host families (which meant we could sleep in after a week of early mornings). We began the day with a leisurely morning before catching a train to Treviso, a city/town near Valdobbiadene. The historical center of Treviso. While it was a relatively long ride, it was nice to have the time to rest and reflect on the previous days. In Treviso, we shopped at a few stores before sitting down for brunch. The menu included a mix of Italian and American food, and it was admittedly nice to have a reminder of the cuisine back home. A representative store in Treviso. Italy 2025 - Day 7: Venice - Anya and Carthan

Anya and Carthan: After our first night staying with the students from Valdobbiadene, we enjoyed separate mornings and breakfasts with each of our host families before meeting at the Montebelluna train station. We changed trains in Treviso to reach our final destination of Venice. The group and our Italian friends on the regional commuter train to Venice. The rainy approach by train across the lagoon to Venice. We walked the streets with our umbrellas and saw many bridges and colorful buildings. The group and our Italian friends navigate the labyrinthian Venetian streets. The group and our Italian friends visit Venice’s Jewish Quarter. The group reaches the Rialto Bridge. While there, we visited the Piazza San Marco, characterized by the Venetian lion emblem, as well as the various cultural influences on its architecture.
